Create a report on your own style of photography

My style of photography is: Urban Documentary photography

Although I have only taken pictures of things in nature I feel like the bird feeder shot is what brought to urban photographer, after seeing something so unnatural in a natural place it got me thinking of how unnatural an urban town can be. A lot of the things in an urban town have been either man made or natural, I want to be able to uncover these little things that make an urban town beautiful.

This is a piece of photography I have taken, the subject in the photo is a bird feeder in the style of a heart. I took it from the side to let the sunlight come out from the trees a bit. This was one of my first pieces of doing photography and I am glad it came out the way it did. Although the picture is of a bird feeder in the style of a heart you can hardly tell that it is a heart, so next time I will be moving into a position where I can capture the heart shape. Another point I want to make is that the bird feeder is a unnatural shape in a natural environment.

After looking at different photos by many different photographers I have found urban documentary photography which has a lot of images that document urban town. This would be a good style for as it wouldn't take me long to get a photo of a life in an urban town.

This is an image taken by Joshua K Jackson who specialises in urban documentary photography. This is a portrait of a man stood outside a shop smoking, the  photographer has deliberately used a low aperture with no flash attached to camera which helps the light from the neon signs get into the camera and it doesn't light up the man which gives him a mysterious aura and creates a sense of fear.

This is another image(see below) that is a part of urban documentary photography and it is brilliantly composed this is mainly because it's an aerial shot of a woman walking down the street but only her black umbrella and red boots while it rains. It really captures on what it's like to live in the city. The way they have used the color to make the image pop, which is a term called color popping. It also works in the golden ratio (seen below) as it shows the subject of frame in the middle of the line of the golden ratio. Even the angles that are used on the road and the yellow lines on the road also give the sharp angles needed to create this effect.

In this photo it shows a couple in street as the boy is trying to talk to the woman she isn't listening. Although the main focus on this image is the couple there is a lot going on the background that the photographer chose to keep in focus such as the busy streets and the person in the background looking at the two. Another thing that is interesting about this photo is that the couple are actually models and that the two together are staged while the people in the background are actually not models and that they are just curious into what is going on.

Who are my influences?

One of my influencers is Paola M Franqui, also know as Monaris, is a Puerto-Rican photographer who specialises in street and urban photography. Her images are very detailed as most of them show reflections in windows with someone sat inside them. She is partnered with adobe Lightroom. She is mainly based in New Jersey and this is where she conducts most of her photos.

Another one of my influencers are is Joshua K Jackson who is very experienced in abstract street photography. His photos mainly take place during night and are lit up by neon signs. He is a London based photographer.

What do I need to work on to emulate or surpass my influencers.

The main thing I need to work is being able to capture something in the moment rather than having it staged, although some of my photos can be staged, street and urban documentary photography is all about what is happening around you. Another thing I have to emulate is the lighting techniques used by some of my influencers, especially the one that was taken by Joshua K Jackson, with the neon lights and no flash which then create a sense of mystery around the person. Furthermore, to surpass my influencers I want to emulate what they did but better, for example I have been studying a lot of Monaris' work and how she captures photos in the reflection, I feel like combining her style with Joshua's would be a good idea since it allows me to use what I have learnt from the two to create a nice piece work by using the lighting that is already around and the reflection of someone. Another thing I want to emulate from my influencers is the brave to take pictures in an urban area.
